we spoke with republican arizona senator jon kyl. nice to see you. >> thanks greta. >> greta: big crisis this whole debt ceiling. let me take you back to february '09 and the stimulus bill. if the stimulus bill had been more effective in revving up the economy, i take it we would have more revenue and we would be not quite in this crisis or it would be a different crisis. >> this is a different kind of recession. not one in which consumer demand is driving recovery that's why the bush stimulus didn't work. the obama stimulus didn't work. when you take a trillion dollars and basically give it to people to spend and it doesn't move the numbers in fact now, we are at a 2% of growth -- under 2% of growth of gdp last quarter of '09 we were at almost 6%. we've gone downhill. the stimulus did not help. all it did was add to our debt. >> greta: we are all focusing on this problem. once we get through this crisis we have to think down the road. are we on the right track in terms of revving up our economy so we have more revenue because people

[ inaudible ] sir, good to have you. the president raises the default possibility with social security recipients by extension potentially veterans. that's not the case? >> not at all. let's be clear. there's plenty of money in the month of august to take care of the bond holders. to make sure social security recipients get their checks and make sure our troops get paid. there's plenty to do that. this bill is a great piece of legislation it spells that out clearly. after that the president will have to make some choices. you have to lead, make decisions about what gets paid in what order. there's plenty of money to take care of those three things. >> neil: that's his call once we are in that potential environment? >> right. we think he can do this now. he can, instead of scaring seniors and veterans and our troops he can say there's money enough to make sure we pay the bond holders so there is no default. money to pay social security checks an

jon: no. he seemed to be saying that republicans are holding the white house hostage and saying if you don't accept our plan as a whole, we're going to blow up the economy, that is what he seemed to be saying. >> well the republicans have been at the bargaining table. they have offered concessions and they have offered so many opportunities for compromise but the president basically never would agree to anything, and there was never anything concrete from the president. i think the lack of leadership, even the timing of the leadership, he didn't even get in this until two weeks ago, he should have been starting on this in january. he knew this debt ceiling had to be raised. and he was not being helpful with the budget he put forward. it was a freeze on 2011 spending which is an elevated spending level because of his stimulus package. so i think that he needs to come to the table earlier and provide leadership. i think now congress is saying, well, we're going to have to do something short-term
